Review: Saal Digital Photo Books

This is the first in a series of product reviews I’m planning.

Earlier in the year, 2021, I spotted an ad on social media from a company hunting for photographers to test and review their products.

Full disclosure: they gave me a voucher for the book, but I paid shipping.

Content Creation:

They need a PDF of the book to begin their end of the process. They offer a desktop application to use for this. This was the option I went with, but looking back, I should have used Adobe InDesign, as their own application left a lot to be desired. It has this annoying habit of enabling auto-fit for each page layout by default. But it does have pre-designed layouts for the portrait photographer and wedding shooters. For my project, a book of my landscape work, the predesigned layouts were a non-starter.

After that, uploading and payment were all handled in the application.

Then the waiting.

Recent winter storms caused a delay in their shipping vendor, and I was surprised to see they did the printing in Germany.

So the book arrived.

Book Quality:

Upon opening, I was impressed with the cover. I went with something simple, black leather with silver lettering.

The book itself is 12×8, 42 pages, on matte photo paper.

The images themselves reproduced really nice. I spotted some mistakes on my end, but overall, a high quality product.  The book lays nice and flat, even trim and a good job with the binding.

If you are a photographer and you have never printed your work, you have to. I grew up in the olden days of digital photography and you had to print everything. There is something about seeing your work IN PRINT that is most satisfying.

Check out SAAL digital. Their work is outstanding.
