The Pac-12 appears to be working out the final details of a deal that would bring Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech to the conference, sources close to the situation told the American-Statesman on Sunday morning.
The deal would allow the Longhorns to keep the Longhorn Network, but would have to add Pac-12 programming.
Orangebloods.com reported, citing anonymous sources, the network would likely be renamed the Pac-12 Texas Network and the Pac-16 would most likely be divided into four-team pods with Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech in one pod; Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah in another pod; Oregon, Oregon State, Washington and Washington State in another pod; and USC, UCLA, California and Stanford in the other pod.
OK -so it’s time to usher in the age of the Super Conferences (my mind sees a pudgy guy in a ill-fitting super hero costume with a large S-C on the chest….)
My biggest question is – will this result in a REAL playoff system, scrapping the BCS system – relegating it to history as a failed experiment like communism, the Edsel, New Coke, Sony Betamax and HD-DVD?
I sure as hell hope so.
Seriously, you cannot have a “National Champion” unless there is a playoff system to insure the two best teams are playing each other. The eggheads in the NCAA say it’s because it’ll take up too much time and distract from scholastic efforts of the players and fans.
To this, and other straw-man arguments, I call out “Bull Shit!”
NCAA sports in other areas, such as baseball, basketball, volleyball and competitive pole dancing have a playoff match system in place. Why not Football?
A “Pod” system as described in this article would make travel not as big of an issue as it woul dunder an East/West division.
I”m taking a wait & see attitude, but this is likely how it’ll turn out if the Big 12 goes the way of the Southwest Conference…
