My early work

My early work

I shot this image sometime in 1976 or so. Desiree, a friend from high school. She found it a few years ago and scanned it, sending it to me via Facebook.

I seemed to have this talent for capturing young women. This eventually led to my adventures in Los Angeles.

No matter how good your talent is, it takes development. I look back and see that I pretty much Forest Gumped my photography until after college.

One thing I really miss about the early days is the art of processing the images. The magic of watching that print appear on the paper as it sat in the developing tray, under a red light, slowly fading into existence as I gently rocked the tray.

I loved the smell of photo fixer in the morning. It smelled like art…
