Milky Way hangs by a cosmic thread – ABC Sydney – Australian Broadcasting Corporation

The Milky Way sits like a bead on a cosmic thread, according to Australian astronomers who have identified our galaxy’s position in the large-scale structure of the cosmos.

Dr Stefan Keller, from the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the Australian National University, and colleagues made the discovery while studying ancient balls of tightly packed stars called globular clusters.

Look at this image. Our galaxy, the Milky Way, is just a small, insignificant speck. Our star is just another small, insignificant speck inside this purple pixel.

And to think that somehow, in some way, we’re extra special to any being with the power to create ALL THIS is laughable in the extreme. To think that this being is in ANY way concerned with what we do and how we live our lives and how we dress and who we fuck or don’t fuck, who we are at war with and who catches that touchdown pass is even more laughable.
